Expiration Dates

Info on

There are no uniform or universally accepted descriptions used on food labels for open dating in the United States.  As a result, there are a wide variety of phrases on labels, such as: “Best if Used By/Before,” “Use-By,” “Sell-By,” and “Freeze-By.” We want to help clarify what these dates mean to you as a consumer.

First: What is Open Dating? Open Dating (the use of a calendar date as opposed to a code on a food product) is a date stamped on a product’s package to help the store determine how long to display the product for sale. It can also help the purchaser to know the time limit to purchase or use the product at its best/ideal quality. This is not a safety date.

  • This date is a recommendation for when a product will be of best flavor or quality.  This is not a purchase or safety date.

  • These dates tell the store how long to display the product for sale, specifically for inventory management. It is not a safety date.

  • This date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management.  It is not a safety date.

Note: once a perishable product is frozen at the proper temperature, it does not matter if the date expires because food kept frozen continuously is safe indefinitely. Packaging is important to the quality and appearance of frozen foods. Products exposed to air can develop “freezer burn”, which does not affect the safety of the product, but can impact taste and quality.
